Jaipur Travel - Sights to See in Jaipur

Jaipur is one of the most fascinating cities in the world. One of the few planned cities in India, it is also called the 'Pink City' due to the pink color of the buildings in the inner city. It was built in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and was the capital of the Rajput kingdom. It is a beautiful city teeming with history and culture, and a must visit destination if you are visiting India.

One of the most important landmarks of the city is the Amer fort. Located a few miles from the city center, this fort occupies a strategic location just outside the city gates. It is situated on a hill top and offers a commanding view of the countryside. Besides a fort, it is also a beautiful palace with rich architecture. Be sure to take the elephant ride up to the fort - its an experience in itself.

Another famous Jaipur landmark is the Hawa Mahal. This little palace is situated in the heart of the old city, in the equally memorable Johari Bazaar. Literally translated, its name means "Wind Palace". This is because of the thousands of window dotting its facade. It was the palace for the King's wives and thus, is beautifully constructed.

Just outside Jaipur is the fort of Nahargarh. A favorite haunt of college students, this fort, while not very well kept, has a archaic beauty about it. It also offers breathtaking views of the city.

One more must-see landmark is the Jal Mahal - the "Water Palace". It is located in the middle of a lake. Its pristine white walls shimmer off the lake's surface and offers a tranquil sight. If you are visiting in the rainy season, Jal Mahal becomes an even more enchanting sight.

Other places to see in Jaipur are the old city, the Statue Circle, historic temples at Chandpole, and the "pseudo village" of Chokhi Dhani just outside the city.

Jaipur is a wonderful tourist destination and is definitely the crown jewel of Northern India.
